Who was Joseph Pilates?
Legendary trainer Joseph H. Pilates (1880-1967) spent his life perfecting his repertoire of exercises, performed either on a mat or specially designed apparatus. He created the Pilates movements using the body's "powerhouse", the deep muscles of the abdomen (the transversus abdominus), legs, lower back and gluteals, to originate and stabilize each movement. Pilates pairs these controlled movements with focused breathing, attention to precision and control and whole body integration. Joseph Pilates trained elite dancers and athletes for decades. Pilates focuses on learning to move better so the benefits are felt in everyday life!
